How it Began…
Across my twenty-five years as a professional stage and screen actor, I carried what I thought of as “high ambition,” but in truth, it was a relentless dissatisfaction. No achievement, performance, or opportunity ever felt like enough. Coupled with industry narratives such as “the show must go on” or “those who can’t do, teach,” this mindset cultivated unhealthy competitiveness, deep fear of failure, porous boundaries, substance reliance, and chronic burnout—patterns I ignored for years because I believed they were simply part of the job.
When the pandemic arrived, something unexpected happened: I felt calm. With auditions halted and performance demands lifted, I discovered just how deeply I had desensitized myself to stress. What I had labeled as resilience was actually emotional suppression—stress stored under the surface that emerged through explosive outbursts at home and harmful coping habits I had come to accept as normal.
That realization marked a turning point.
I began training as a mental health coach and slowly pieced together what had been missing in my own life: nervous system literacy, somatic awareness, mindfulness, and trauma-informed self-understanding. I learned I could heal what I had spent years overriding. I could imagine returning to acting one day with agency, self-knowledge, and the capacity to walk away from roles or environments that compromised my wellbeing.
After several years focused on coaching, I returned to performing in 2025—this time with myself as the research subject. I built and tested a methodology for attuning to internal parts, establishing true consent in body and mind, and advocating for my needs from contract negotiation to performance practice.
I had nearly abandoned a career I loved because participating in the industry as I once did felt too costly. And I think often about the countless brilliant artists who have left because they lacked the tools or support to navigate that cost.
If performers learn to advocate for themselves with clarity, compassion, and embodied consent—if we know what a true “yes” or a firm “no” feels like in our bodies, and what’s at stake when we ignore those messages—we can transform power dynamics. We can make phrases like “this is a safe space” mean something real, because safety will exist within us first.
Empowered Performers — artists with agency, boundaries, embodied consent, and an unwavering belief that wellbeing is not negotiable.
